Storyline :-
Hae Yi is a freshman at Yonhee University in the year 2019. As she comes from a poor family, she focuses mainly on earning money. She joins the Theia Cheerleading Squad just for the purpose of making money, but happens to learn true love there. Jung Woo is a senior student at Yonhee University and is also the leader of Theia. Being a principled student with a warm heart, he leads the squad in need despite his exam studies. Sun Ho is a Medical School freshman who has always been an elite student. However, he feels something that he never felt before when meeting Hae Yi at the cheerleading squad. The future of Theia and the relationships of these young students will unravel soon.
Review :-
If you have even an iota of doubt whether to watch this kdrama and are scrolling through the reviews for the same, then just stop and watch it please – BECAUSE this is such a cute drama with the right amount of romance, mystery, comedy and emotions involved. It made me nostalgic about my school & college days. Also, don’t go by the bad reviews please because it is mostly since their bias didn’t get the girl.
I LOVED Han Ji-hyun. She did an amazing work portraying her character. She is not the typical damsel in distress which we usually see in campus dramas. She is so quirky, spirited and upfront about her feelings. You can’t help falling in love with her.
Bae In-hyuk is BAE! I am glad that he got the character of Jungwoo. This character is love. He is shy and awkward but a romantic and a baby at heart. He studies the stars and cheerleads. While others may say he is slow; I believe he is thoughtful. He just is so calm and cute. Tbh, this is the type of guy who I would want to be with in real life.
The other male lead character annoyed me abit. He was shown as being popular amongs girls despite him being a walking RED FLAG! Maybe, that is what we call pretty privilege. However, I could empathise with his character sometimes. Kim Hyun-jin played the role so convincingly that I was screaming “red flag” as well “cutie” at my screen.
The mystery story line was good enough. It kept us guessing initially and wasn’t that scary. I enjoyed the typical love triangle but what I love the most was the slow burn romance between the OG couple. They showed each other their vulnerabilities which made me connect with their relationship more.
I saw comments equating the level of SL syndrome in this drama to that of ‘True Beauty’. Even though I was team SuHo, I did love SeoJun and did feel bad for him in the end. However, I didn’t feel any SL syndrome in this drama. While I enjoyed the interaction between the second ML and FL, I didn’t want them to end up together. Though he was kind to FL, he was quite manipulative.
I loved the cheer team shenanigans. The families and their bonding shown was emotional and funny. All in all, I loved this drama. So, thank you so much ‘Team Cheer Up’! Also, I would suggest watching the real videos of cheerleading tradition of Yonsei University in Korea because it is really cool.
